I managed to sort out the side bars (I think) and have labeled any changes I made to w/skins/WordPress.php. I've also shrunk the grey box around Categories at the bottom (removing another validator error in the process). I can't think of a nice way to shrink the size of text in the categories themselves at the moment, as presumably this only wants to happen on large categories (small categories like the misspelled Category:Neighbour presumably want to keep their list of hymns emboldened).
