Hymn - I knew my Lord Jesus - Lyrics
I knew my Lord Jesus in lands far away,
in the land of the Jordan and David's bright throne.
My Lord he did send me to bring all the good news,
to teach, heal and forgive where ever I roam.
I know my Lord Jesus and walk with him daily
through the fields and the forest, a long way from home.
My Lord, he is with me, as I preach of his love;
in God's grace on earth, I am never alone.
So meet my Lord Jesus and walk with him gladly
and bring peace and his blessing ever into your home.
Our Lord, he is with us, our friend and redeemer,
so smile now and laugh, we are never alone.
History
One of the churches of the Ridgeway Benefice is the parish church of Ogbourne St. Andrew. When looking for a hymn to celebrate the Patronal Festival of St. Andrew, no suitable hymn could be found, so "I knew my Lord Jesus" was written for the occasion. The hymn is written as if the words were spoken by St Andrew and the association was with Scotland "a long way from home" for a Galilean. The tune is a traditional Gaelic melody which may have been called "Bridget O'Malley" originally.
