Samuel Medley (1738 - 1799) was an English Baptist Minister and hymnist, born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Originally apprenticed to the British Royal Navy, he became a midshipman in 1755. He was wounded in battle of Port Lagos in 1759 and whilst recuperating was read a sermon by Isaac Watts that led to his call to ministry. he was obliged to retire from active service, he studied under Dr. Gifford in London and in 1767, became pastor at the Baptist church in Watford, Herefordshire. In 1772, he moved to Byrom Street, Liverpool there he gathered a large congregation and was very popular. He lived until his death after a painful illness in 1799.
