Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153) was a French churchman, monk and mystic. At the age of 21 in 1112 he entered the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux and then in 1115 he headed the group sent to found a house at Clairvaux.
There he remained as abbot for the remainder of his life. He has a reputation for living a holy and saintly life and many miraculous cures are attributed to him. It was, however, his otstanding eloquence which made Bernard renowned and allowed him to become one of the most powerful religious influences in all Western Europe. His style is said to be strong and eloquent, full of biblical allusions, and intensely personal and direct. His mystical theology had decisive influence on the Cistercian order, and he is sometimes called its second founder.
During his lifetime 68 monasteries were established from Clairvaux alone. He was canonized in 1174.
