Ralph McTell (b. 1944) was born Ralph May in Hammersmith, London, England, son of Winifred and Frank May. He was called Ralph after Ralph Vaughan Williams for whom Frank worked as a gardener. Frank left home a year after being demobilised from the army after the Second World War and he was brought up by his mother.
