Martin Rinkart (1586 - 1694) was a German writer and composer born in Eilenburg, Saxony where he attended the Latin School. At the age of 15 Rinkart became a foundation scholar and chorister of the St Thomas School in Leipzig. In the following year he entered the University of Leipzig as a student of Theology. Rinkart held positions at the Eisleben Gymnasium, St Anne’s Church in the Neustadt of Eisleben, Erdeborn and Lütjendorf, near Eisleben before returning to Eilenburg as archidiaconus in 1617.
