Tune: Luinneach
From HymnsWithoutWords
Luinneach is the Irish form of Limmerick, a city and the county seat of County Limerick in the province of Munster, in the midwest of the Republic of Ireland. The city lies on the River Shannon, with three main crossing points near the city centre. The orginal Irish can be translated as "open ground - of the horses."
The city existed as a Viking town from 812, but archaeology suggests an earlier settlement date. Redesigned by The Normans in the 12th century they built some impressive architecture, such as the Castle of King John and the Cathedral of St Mary. The city played a pivotal role during the civil wars of the 17th century having bee besieged by Oliver Cromwell in 1651 and twice by the King William's troops in the 1690s.
