James Edmeston (1791 - 1867) was an English architect and surveyor as well as a prolific writer of some 2,000 hymns. Born in Wapping, Middlesex, England, his maternal grandfather was the Reverend Samuel Brewer, pastor of an Independent congregation in Stepney for 50 years.

He began as an architect in 1816, and Sir G. Gilbert Scott, the architect of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh was his pupil.

He served as the church warden at St. Barnabas in Homerton, Middlesex and was a strong supporter of and frequent visitor to the London Orphan Asylum. He died in Homerton in 1867.
