Biography
Younger brother of Martin Shaw (1875–1958) was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral, educated at Derby School and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Where he was organ scholar. He studied with Charles Villiers Stanford and Charles Wood. Appointed Director of Music at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk 1902 - 1910, he then held several organist's posts, including St Mary's Primrose Hill from 1920. As inspector of music in London schools from 1911-40 and chairman of the BBC schools music sub-committee, he did much to raise standards of musical education and performance in schools. He was also greatly in demand as an adjudicator at various music festivals. Shaw also edited several song-books, was one of the editors of The Public School Hymn Book 1919, and published the 2-volume Descant Hymn-Tune Book.
